Popcorn Movie Or Real Feelings
SPEAKER_00You're asking the wrong questions.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, what's what's the question?
SPEAKER_00That's what we want. That's right. No, you're right. Does does it does it make a good popcorn movie? Oh sh you're getting too much.
SPEAKER_03I was just exactly I was thinking about fucking.
SPEAKER_00You're right, man. I was thinking about put butts in stuff.
SPEAKER_03No, that's exactly what it is. I was thinking about feeling for the characters, you know what I mean? I was thinking about placing myself in the the catharsis of it all. That's what I was thinking about. I wasn't thinking about popcorn. Human connection? I know.
Why We Recorded Before Release
SPEAKER_02Hey guys, right quick, we just want to let you guys know that this uh episode was shot uh more than a couple weeks before the release of the film. Uh we wanted to kind of get our thoughts out before any collective consensus or reviews or or audience responses or anything else like that came out. We plan on seeing the film soon, and we will turn around and review really quickly after that. But in the meantime, hope you enjoyed the episode. Well,
What We Judge Before Release
SPEAKER_02welcome to a very special episode of Lore Lounge. Today we're not gonna get into the nitty-gritty of characters or story. We're actually talking about the release of the Street Fighter movie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the new Street Fighter movie, I believe it premieres October 16th, 2026.
SPEAKER_02Too soon. Too soon.
SPEAKER_03Too soon indeed.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I mean we'll we'll get into how we feel about everything. That's that's loaded, that's neither here nor there. We're gonna go over the announcement and all the trailers and see how we feel, see how we're predictions, if you will, because I have my thoughts, you know, positive and negative, and we can get we can get through that and see where we stand.
SPEAKER_03Alright. So you you wanna you wanna look at the material first before you have a response, because it kind of seems like you have a response already.
SPEAKER_02I don't have a response yet. I have I have I'm trying to be as unbiased as possible. No, that's but as you know, we've been doing a lot of research about what makes Street Fighter Street Fighter, and just even the the small amount of effort uh that we've been doing for this podcast it comparatively, I I just it just feels like the people who are working on Street Fighter isn't even putting that same amount of effort into it, you know? Like that that that's all I'm already feeling right off the bat. I'm not trying to be hot and spicy from the minute, but I just feel like something's happening where I can't even like now that we're starting to talk about this, I'm starting to get heated and I we haven't even.
SPEAKER_03Okay, yep, no, you're right, you're right. Tone it down, tone it down. I'm gonna tone it down.
SPEAKER_02Sorry, sorry, sorry. All right, well let's let's let's run
Why The Announcement Felt Off
SPEAKER_02it back. When Street Fighter was first the movie was first announced, what did you what did you think?
SPEAKER_03It was announced years ago.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because there were different directors at the time. I was intrigued. Um because the directors, they had done a lot of stuff on YouTube, and there was some stuff on YouTube that were that specifically featured the Street Fighter characters. The Rack Raga Boys. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I mean it was it was slapstick silly, but it was also kind of intriguing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I I I also feel before they were attached, the Street Fighter movie was announced. Just the fact that they like legendary is doing it, and we have a date.
SPEAKER_03Possibly, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, and that that already made me feel like uh okay. That was yeah, I mean, we have a history of Street Fighter films and what they have it's like uh so someone didn't someone didn't come along and say, Hey, this is my vision, this is how I feel like Street Fighter could be whatever, and that prompted a like, yeah, Street Fighter is not only popular over the all over the world, but like different generations are experiencing it. So, like, this might be a good time to reintroduce a thing that takes the lore and uh makes it makes it bite-sized for people who are coming in and being introduced to these characters for the first time. It like it wasn't like that type of movement, it was just like, hey, we need to do Street Fighter. We need to buy the date, we need to hear here here's where it's gonna come out. Now we need to figure out who's gonna make it, who's gonna write it, who's gonna whatever. If we're getting really into it, I think that's where my bias immediately comes in. It's not that like, oh, this talented director, this talented writer is gonna take this vision and do something with it. It's like we're gonna come out with a Street Fighter movie no matter what, no matter what.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_02And we're trying to find people who will do it no matter what.
SPEAKER_03Here's the announcement of this IP, stay interested in what we're doing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, exactly. Yeah, so right off the bat, and that's why anyone who comes after that announcement, no matter who they are, what their background is, or whatever, I'm like, you're all trying to race to your date, no matter whether you have the the right script, the right feeling, the right care about the characters, the right cast, the right whatever. It's like you're just racing to who can get it done the most efficient, etc. You know. Alright, now that we've figured out why I've I've come off so heated so quickly, it doesn't represent like a disdain or anything for the people um who are doing the current movie or whatever, but just right off the bat, you say Street Fighter movie, I'm like, you started on the wrong foot. So that was announced, then the Rock Rock Boys got in, and see that was interesting too. So they got in and they maybe, for what it's worth, saw the shit show.
SPEAKER_03Whether there be create creative differences or whatever from what I understand, there were creative and scheduling differences that caused them to step away.
SPEAKER_02Key word, which I'm assuming maybe the creative differences stem from scheduling differences. It's like, oh, you guys have this idea, but we can't do that because we already bought the date. We you need to make sure the movie comes out here. So it's like they're out, right?
Director Changes And Casting Doubts
SPEAKER_02Then flash to the announcement that they got Kitao Sakurai. I will say 100%. I'm not no, I'm familiar with his work because like when I think of him, I think of Eric Andre. He didn't, yeah. Eric Andre show. Yeah, yeah. So that's what I'm familiar with, right? So like I don't think of oh, he can take a video game franchise and whatever, but then he already did apparently. He worked on the Twisted Metal series.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_02And I get it. I'm trying to give everything the benefit of the doubt because I have no I have no idea why he was selected or why you know he might have came in and had either a great pitch or came in and said, I can do it for your timeline. But the fact that that then he immediately casts Eric Andre, which outside of this I'm fine with, but I'm like, why are you putting Eric in a Street Fighter movie? Sure, whatever. But then he casts Andrew Schultz for Dan Hubiki. That's when I would immediately wanted to dismiss him. Because like, even if I know you're saying, hey, look at Dan Hubiki, he's a joke character. So who could who can get maybe my one of my comedian friends can come in as play as but the but the and we we don't have to get into the lore aspect of this. We're essentially doing this episode not talking deep about lore, but just throw it in there. Obviously, Dan Hibiki's character, he's a joke character made to make fun of SNK fighters in the street fighting universe, but but uh his his story is like he was training with Ryu and Ken a little bit and he was thrown out of that dojo. His father was killed by Sagat, murdered by Sagat, and his you know Sagat's eye is missing because of Dan's father, right? So like you can have him be a joke character, but he also a part of his story is you know uh a good representation of of what Street Fighter is, right? So you don't I don't want to just get a comedian. I want like you want someone who could do the com uh the comedic aspects, but then have like potentially a serious moment with Sagat later. Like you're laughing at this loser, this whole movie, and then he meets, he finally meets the guy that kills killed his father that he's training to have revenge for, and he changes like that. Like that type of I don't see Andrew Schultz doing that shit. Like, like he's not a martial artist in in general. I don't I know we're we don't have to get into it.
SPEAKER_03Shots fired. We don't have to get into that.
SPEAKER_02So so uh just the benefit of the doubt is like leaving my body.
SPEAKER_03I see, yeah, you know, and that's understandable because we have been disappointed in the past by the two live action films based in Street Fighter that we have consumed already, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I feel like those two endeavors also started with the the wrong mindset in line, and now this is another one, right? So let's all retroactively try to fix this experience and make this a fun throwaway popcorn movie, get the memes in, get the whatever, get people pumped and excited and hyped about this.
SPEAKER_03But you know, anyways, okay, so casting started coming out, but uh we got a synopsis that dropped about Yeah, I was about to say before you go any further, because you what you said was that we were gonna get the information first and then we were gonna have a response, and you were just like, I have already responded.
SPEAKER_02I've been I think I've been harboring so many feelings about this that I'm like it's been hard for me to express them, and now that I'm like just like okay, cool, I need to gather my thoughts to be able to express them for the podcast, and just anger.
SPEAKER_01Just anger.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, just anger just started to envelop. I was chill the whole night. I was chill the whole night before we started talking, but as soon as we as soon as we started talking about this, like immediately I changed.
SPEAKER_03Alright, so let the cooler head prevail here. I'm gonna go ahead and read you the synopsis.
SPEAKER_02I wanted I wanted to come off non-biased.
SPEAKER_03I hear you. Let's get to the synopsis before we continue. Alright.
Synopsis Breakdown And Story Stakes
SPEAKER_03Said in 1993, Estrange Street Fighters Ryu and Ken Masters are thrown back into combat when the mysterious feeling.
SPEAKER_02I need I need a God, you're I'm not feeling this. I need I need something to kind of get if you want my true reaction, okay. I feel like I need some sort of gravita, some sort of you know, let me feel this synopsis, you know? Like I just I'm curious to because you want my my real reaction, right? So let's let's let's read it out.
SPEAKER_03I got you.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03Said in 1993, estranged street fighters, Ryu and Ken Masters are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun Li recruits them for the next World Warrior tournament. A brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don't, it's game over.
SPEAKER_01Game over because it's like a video. Game over, it's like a video game. So sick. Cool. Cool.
SPEAKER_03That gets you fired up. What I find interesting is that they are estranged right now. When I first read that synopsis, I went, okay, where where in this story are we?
SPEAKER_02And the r reason Chung Li is recruiting all the fighters for a world tournament?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Anyways. So that that if we're talking again about knee-jerk reactions, I was like, uh, okay, what that. Um, Ryu and Ken being estranged. I know, like, even in the Street Fighter movie, the animated one that we all like, they had this we're going on our different paths because you know it's it's time to find our different paths or whatever. So you were excited about the reunion. Here it's like it it feels like something happened. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_03So I need more information, is basically what I would say, just even from a storytelling perspective, there is a conflict that we are entering. So the Ken and Ryu that we would know and that everyone would know, you know, brothers in arms, as it were, that's not happening. And we will hopefully find out why throughout the course of the film, but there's already something that we can sort of look forward to.
SPEAKER_02But the situation you're throwing us into the situation where they're already like we don't this, whatever their Street Fighter world that they're building right now, we don't have an understanding of who you and Ken are. We're we're seeing them for the first time.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So seeing a brotherly relationship and understanding it, and not just through flashbacks or whatever, like you're you're already going into the thing where they're they're estranged and you know something happened, maybe they hate each other or whatever, right? I want to see them at a point where we can establish their their relationship, and then um if you want to put a rift in it, that can happen later and we can feel that pain, you know.
SPEAKER_03I see.
SPEAKER_02I feel a lot of projects aren't getting the reaction they want is bec because there's no proper bill, there's no reason for us to to care about certain things. So if you're already starting with this riff when they do, if by the end of the movie they're all like, okay, cool, let's get back to get back to what we do best and learn they're they're working together to defeat bison or whatever the whatever the story ends up being. And we'd be like, okay, cool.
SPEAKER_03I think I that's interesting to me because and maybe this sort of speaks uh a bit about what this movie is or what it's going to be for us. I think they are operating already under the premise that those who are coming to watch this movie understand who Ken and Ryu are and who they are to each other.
SPEAKER_02Everyone wants to speed run establishing lore and getting people on board with what project you're doing, right? I would prefer whether it comes out right now where everyone's like talking about Street Fighter or whatever, or if someone watches this whatever this Street Fighter movie is 10, 15 years down the line, and understand what's important about these characters and grow with them and who who they are and get that understanding. But I know there's like this feeling of like we don't have time for that, but then you do, and then when you do do that, you do do that build, you're rewarded extremely for it, like with the Marvel Cinematic Universe or any like you know, television show that lets you grow with the characters or whatever. And if you are and the whole point is it feels like this is trying to become a new franchise, right? Like they're they want to make this in competition with the Mortal Kombat movies.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I hear that, and and I also I get the feeling that people are kind of bored of continuously rehashing origin stories.
SPEAKER_02Because yeah, because they never do it right. That's the problem. We're bored of yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_03Here we go.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, uh I I too am bored of rehashing things because you're rehashing something that didn't work the first time, and then you're doing it again and it's not working still. Like, do it right and we won't have a problem. I want one done right. Give me one done right.
SPEAKER_03Mommas is angry right now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. I I want one done right, and I know as an ensemble tournament movie, that is gonna be very difficult and very hard. I get that. But we need to do better.
SPEAKER_03Probably the best way to see
Trailer Tone Action And Worldbuilding
SPEAKER_03the direction they're going is to check out the trailers. There was some footage that was played, I think, for the first time. But at the game awards, there are a lot of very older gentlemen in this movie.
SPEAKER_02Especially if it's supposed to be like, you know, like they're setting 1993. Right, right. They're setting in the in the the prime of all these characters' lives, right?
SPEAKER_03So and also uh the first image of Guile was the hair. Yeah, the question is was the hair good looking, right? Yeah, uh that's a hard thing to pull off, and we do have a little bit of experience with hair, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, trying to make that work, right? It's definitely difficult. It's like it's in the game, you have to do it, but make it make sense in the cinematic world, and that's always like the the fun, hard, difficult part. But that's when you like really care. Like, okay, cool, let's let's make it work. And yeah, it looks cheap and weird, depending on Cody Rhodes' performance and like how they portray Guyle and what his responsibilities are, what he what he's doing in the movie. Like, I want him to have that hair, but you to still be intimidated by him. I'm not intimidated by that, you know what I mean? I know it's like tough, but that is like the cool thing about movie magic. Wouldn't it be cool to leave the theater and be like, yo, Kyle is fucking sick? You know what I mean? Like to have that feeling, but uh the fact that I don't think I could I could say that right now.
SPEAKER_03Right, okay, so and and that's interesting because that's your first impression, and I feel like that's what the teaser is doing, not just for each character that was showcased, but also first impression on what this action is gonna look like. First impression of the world itself, like the the colors, the tone, what's going on in the background.
SPEAKER_02It's weird because it feels expensive, but it feels cheap. Does does that make any sense? Some of the sets look cool, but then once they once the characters start moving in these environments, is like ah, like it feels like a tonal mismatch. I don't know. I I I'm not I'm not vibing with it. I know what a flash kick looks like in in real life, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I know what Guile's flash kick looks like, and that looked like neither.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I do think that there were some things they definitely got right. For example, the casting of Zangifief was absolutely right. Yeah, that dude looks that dude looks like absolutely right, and the spinning sort of you know, body slam onto the table. Chun Li's foot on her neck, like nice, okay.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_03I see where we're going. And then the car parts randomly exploding off with a hit to it that didn't really look like it connected in the first place. You know, is that the we are pulling away from this is something grounded that you can, you know, invest yourself in. Remember, this is a video game.
SPEAKER_02Right, right. These world warriors are all at the top of their caliber. Like, so when you see them move, it's always a spectacle, right? Yeah. And like that focus needed to be like one of the main things about Street Fighter.
SPEAKER_03So I hear you. You're looking for more substance.
SPEAKER_02Always.
SPEAKER_03You're looking for a reason. I got good news for you. Oh, they got a trailer.
SPEAKER_01Okay. A fireball came out of Ryu. Do it, Ryu!
SPEAKER_03Alright, hold on, hold on.
SPEAKER_01Ryu, throw it, please God, don't it?
SPEAKER_03So, can you answer me this? Why is Guile talking about Ryu throwing a fireball where he's got a projectile of his own?
SPEAKER_01Like, what is this? He's moving at the speed of sonic booms and stuff, and he's like, wait, what? You can do that? Yeah, I can I can cut through the sound barrier, but you throw fireballs?
SPEAKER_02Why is it crazy? Is this a world where like you know, someone sees the Hadokin for the first time? We're like, holy shit, or is this a a world where again, like, the world is filled with like these crazy, like intense fighters that can do amazing things, and like this is the gathering of them all. So everyone's like, okay, you know, I I can peep what you can do, but also you don't know what the hell I can do. You know what I mean? Like that feeling should be more, you know, but yeah, yeah, I uh sure. Sure. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03You wanted Guile to be intimidating, and it looks like Guile is is moved to the the comedy side.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, 100%. You have like 50 Cent beating the shit out of Ken.
SPEAKER_03So is that is that is that part of it, you think, is that there are too many recognizable people in this movie that it's hard to divorce them from, in some cases, the personas that they already play.
SPEAKER_02Right. Like when I look at Cody Rhodes, I see Cody Rhodes and I'll see Guy. Right. I look at 50 Cent, I see 50 Cent. Like all these like stunt.
SPEAKER_03And and these are not the people, these are the personas that they are playing professionally.
SPEAKER_02Right, right, right. Yeah. And I and I oh Roman Reigns is a is a Kuma, is a or or Goki is a travesty. I feel I I can't I can't even try to defend Roman Reigns casting. I I don't know, doesn't even if we're looking at him as a crazy one-off, like yeah, the the hotto energy like going through Joe and Joe's like uh I wonder if they're gonna do like for the first time ever, will be a Street Fighter fatality. Just like blows up. Even if it's just for those like crazy, like scary moments they wanted to stunt cast again. And I mean then why? Yeah, I'm I'm not I'm not hyped about that. That that is actually more disappointing than anything.
SPEAKER_03Our initial reactions, would you say overall you're like yeah, like like Yeah, my feeling was that I I felt like it was this is a trailer that shows a movie that's gonna be a lot of fun to sit through and watch. Yeah. It was not the Street Fighter film that I was hoping for.
SPEAKER_02Right, right. It's not right. That that's that's tough. This movie, it's like could give a shit if you care about Street Fighter after the movie is done. As long as when you're in the seats, like you're having a great like having a good time. You're having a good time and the pockets having as soon as you leave, if you don't if you don't think about Street Fighter ever again, it's fine. We we made our money, we're good. You is that fair? It's a little cynical, right?
SPEAKER_03But uh, you know, at least the first part I think is is correct because clearly they need people in the seats watching the thing. Right. And are they really gonna sit through your version, you think?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I would if
Stunt Casting Versus Authenticity
SPEAKER_02I would try to still make it hype, like the thing that I always say is when you're adapting something, borrow from, add on, and and be thankful for and then uh bring stuff back to, you know, like after I feel like I'm getting nothing from from this, you know? So yeah, it might be might be hella. cynical and I'll I'll omit that I'll I'll live with that for right now but I I just I just don't think I don't think we're we're there on the movie. And I don't know whether to be mad at Kitao Sakurai for for how he portrays this movie or am I supposed to be mad at Paramount? Am I supposed to be mad at Ledge Day or am I supposed to be mad at Capcom? Like if we get to that point and is it like Sakurai didn't have enough of a vision uh Sakurai was was was was handcuffed and he had to get it out by this and he had to do this and Capcom kept asking this and the the director of Street Fighter 6 you know he hasn't done a film before so him coming in just saying like hey this should be an aspect you should include but not understanding that hey this is a movie though we need to you know figure out how to how to change this aspect it's like there's a lot of moving pieces and there it just moved so fast to get from announcement on Polygon or whatever we first saw it to where we're about to be with this movie coming out and I don't know I don't think the feeling of like this is gonna be a really really good movie or we're all we're all sold on this vision I don't think was established at any point. I know I have a I have a lot of thoughts and a lot of feelings and I'm trying to figure it out but now now now now that we've seen a lot of the what they wanted to show us on selling us the movie how do you how do you feel at this point at this juncture?
SPEAKER_03I mean honestly with all of the material my initial feeling hasn't changed which is that you know this seems like it's probably gonna be a lot of fun a lot of laughs a lot of you know a lot of people cringing when someone gets slammed through a table or they do a scorpion fall or they're you know getting thrown through a wall or whatever.
SPEAKER_02I would love to eat my words the the the two things and I I will be a hundred percent real about this I have my cynical thoughts sometimes because I just want authenticity come through. Like I want people to be when they're doing something creative as long as you're authentic and as long as you have your good intentions I want to support right but I just been feel like I've been burned so many times with people not being authentic or there there's a there's a ulterior motive behind doing something right so every I I have my my my spider sense tingles a lot when when things are coming out are like hey we're finally doing that thing we're doing a Halo TV show whatever it is right but when I am wrong where I'm like why did you make that casting decision or whatever and it turns out to be great like the two things was I was questioning was like Heath Ledger was the Joker when that came out I was like I knew he was a good actor I felt a good actor but I'm like the night's tale guy is is Jack Nicholson you know I mean like that's what I first felt and I'm like where's this coming from though and I and I and I was a naysayer I'm like I don't know right saw it obviously he's Joker he's he's great he did he did fantastic right and I think yeah it was like Chris Evans as Captain America I was like not another team movie guy or or he was already human torch what are we doing here you know and but when Chris Evans is is a great Captain America right like I will admit when I'm wrong and in both of those situations you know Chris Evans and Heath Ledger for what it's worth had the authenticity had like I want to bring as much greatness to this character as possible. I want to do they did the did the hard work if that's what we're saying and I'm I'm not talking about the just the cast of Street Fighter but everyone above the line like all the the the director and writers and all that if they if they are authentic about it sure I'll support and I'll eat my words I'm like yeah actually go see the Street Fighter or whatever but I don't I don't know and that's not that it feels to me that's not the case but if the movie turns out to be good has some spirit and soul and can be some uh a popcorn fun movie that everyone has a good time with but has that sense of there's something there's something authentic there I will eat my words I we can put this out on the internet and I will apologize you heard it here you heard it here first alright lore lounge Haley's gonna eat his words andrew scholes is going to prove say it is going to prove that he's got what it takes to be Dan Hibiki alright if it's if it's a Transformers one I will forgive it right but if it's a Transformers two three four five six seven leaning in towards that hell I'll I'll forgive it if it's Bumblebee.
SPEAKER_03That was like at least it was trying to have heart right to your credit if I don't see them grow up together go through certain hardships together particularly this one incident where Ryu is dealing with something that he doesn't seem like he can control and Ken is not the one there to pick him up but is instead running away and rejecting you know like yeah at your at your lowest darkest moments your your brother just bails
Popcorn Hat Bet And Listener Reactions
SPEAKER_03on you. Yes yes when that reconciliation happens will they be as close as they should be you already thinking too much brother I might be thinking too much you know you're already I might be you're asking the wrong questions oh yeah what's the question they should get asses in seats that's what we want that's right no you're right does does it does it make a good popcorn movie you're getting too much other release I was just exactly I was thinking about feeling up put butts in no that's exactly what it is I was thinking about feeling for the characters you know what I mean I was thinking about placing myself in the the the catharsis of it all that's what I was thinking about I wasn't thinking about popcorn human connection I know you disgust me I am repulsive I'm a repulsive human being that thinks more about human relationships than I do about popcorn but I'm gonna fix that by watching this movie I'm gonna fix that maybe by watching this movie what I needed was a popcorn hat you that looks like guy's hair I I love the fact that that popcorn bucket hair looks better than his wig and I mean I think he should have just worn that bucket for the movie it's aesthetic and it's functional I understand the assignment I understand what they're doing can I go to the movie and have a good time we can we can and we will we will go to the movie we will check this out alright we will see whether or not uh Haley over here will eat his words instead I think instead of eating the words I'll get the popcorn hat and I'll put the popcorn in it and he can eat the popcorn while he talks about how great and how fun the movie was I think that's I think that's good.
